The Church does not exist for her own sake… but she has to point upwards, beyond herself, to the realms above. The Church is truly herself to the extent that she allows the Other, with a capital “O”, to shine through her — the One from whom she comes and to whom she leads. This was said on Sunday morning by the Pope, in his homily at the Mass for the 22 new cardinals he created in Saturday’s consistory. On the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the vision of the Church represented by the group of sculptures on the altar of the Chair in St. Peter’s Basilica, “due to the genius of Bernini”.
